"We do SEO" is not the same claim as "we do local SEO," and the difference matters more in healthcare than in almost any other category. Here's what actually changes.

Traditional SEO optimizes for a topic. Local SEO optimizes for a place

A generic SEO campaign for "cardiologist" competes against every cardiologist's content on the internet, nationally or even globally. A local SEO campaign for "cardiologist in Banjara Hills" competes against a much smaller, geographically bounded set — and it's the query patients actually type when they're ready to book, not the one they type while casually researching a condition.

Google Business Profile carries more weight than it does elsewhere

For a national e-commerce brand, the website is everything. For a local clinic, the Google Business Profile often outperforms the website itself — patients frequently call directly from the Map Pack listing without ever clicking through to a site. A local SEO strategy treats the profile as a primary asset, not an afterthought pointing back to the "real" website.

Reviews function as a ranking factor, not just social proof

In traditional SEO, reviews mostly influence conversion after a click. In local SEO, review count, recency, and rating directly influence whether a listing shows up in the Map Pack at all. A clinic with excellent content and a thin, stale review profile will consistently lose to a clinic with a mediocre website and a strong, active one.

Proximity beats authority, up to a point

A hospital with enormous domain authority can still lose a "near me" search to a much smaller clinic that's simply closer to the searcher. Local algorithms weight proximity heavily — which means local SEO strategy has to account for where your patients actually are, not just how authoritative your site looks on paper.

What this means practically

  • Your Google Business Profile needs the same strategic attention as your homepage, not less.
  • Content should target location-specific and symptom-specific queries, not just broad specialty terms.
  • A review generation system is a ranking tactic, not just a reputation nicety.
  • Multiple locations need to be treated as genuinely separate local SEO problems, not one campaign split six ways.

Both disciplines matter. But a campaign built as if local SEO were just "SEO, but for a hospital" usually misses most of what actually moves a local ranking.
